The Veil of the Temple was Rent in Twain

This tiny little scripture usually doesn’t mean anything to a good number of Christians, the veil of the temple was rent in twain, but hopefully after this short read, it means a lot more to you!

In Matthew 27, Jesus was killed and in His last bit of pain He cried aloud and gave up the spirit (breath of life) and died. The very next verse is a rim-rocker.

Matthew chapter 27:

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

The veil of the temple was rent in twain or in two from the top of it all the way to the bottom. In addition to this, there was an earthquake that just had to scare the lights out of everyone, but back to the veil.

Why was this important?

To learn why this was important, we have to understand what the veil in the temple was for. While we will not get elaborate in this short post, we do want to offer great insight.

In Leviticus 4 we certainly learn what the veil in the temple is for… see below:

And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock’s blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation:

And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the Lord, before the vail of the sanctuary.

The set of verses from Leviticus explains what the veil in the temple was for. The anointed priest takes the blood of the animal and brings it into the tabernacle of the congregation. He dips his finger into the blood, and sprinkles the blood seven times before the Lord. Where is the Lord?

The Lord is behind the veil of the sanctuary in the Most Holy Place (MHP).

“I still don’t get it!”

No worries…

The priest made sacrifices for the sins of himself, his house, and the nation. When Jesus died on the cross, the earthquake destroyed some things. The veil in the temple was the most important thing it destroyed.

This signified the end of the animal sacrifices because the ultimate sacrifice, Jesus Christ, had been sacrificed. The veil was meant for sprinkling the blood upon it. When it was torn, there is no longer a need to perform this.

There is no longer a need for the killing of animals, and no longer a need for an office of men to do the whole routine. For a moment, there is no more need of the Levites to offer goats and bulls.

This is what it means when we read verse 51 in Matthew 27, the veil of the temple was rent in twain. The animal sacrificial law was abolished, nailed to the cross, over with. We are free from this … we are now to go to the High Priest who sits on the right hand of the Father to intercede for us!

Thank you for explaining this verse. I had just read this portion of Matthew, reading from beginning to end for the first time, and didn’t know the meaning and found your explanation. I must say, so far I have found Matthew 24 to be strikingly profound.

What was behind the veil in Jesus time?
Hadn’t all the articles behind been destroyed?

    • Great question Paul; in “Jesus” time, the chief priests and Sanhedrin were just going through the motions. Many of them were not even the true children of the Creator from the House of Akobe (Jacob). They set it up like it was in the past, but without the true power of the past.
