Matthew chapter 5 summary, Jesus the Holy Messiah from God started His ministry. This chapter is historically called the sermon on the mount because Jesus went onto a mountain and his students came to Him.
He began to teach them what people would consider the New Way or the New Covenant but was it really. It really appears to be the Old Way or Old Covenant with clarity from God who can speak directly to His creation through His flesh and blood Son.
Jesus blessed the poor in spirit, the mournful, the meek, and those who thirst for righteousness. He blessed the merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness and His own sake.
Matthew Chapter 5 Summary
The LORD said His disciples should count it joyful when they are reviled for His sake. Moments of encouragement were also addressed; such they are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
They and we today are to shine our light, and flavor our salt so men can see and glorify our Father in Heaven. Then Jesus transitioned into some reversal type teaching. He made it clear He did not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to fulfill them.
The LORD made it clear that no parts of the law will be diminished. He also said great is the person who keeps the law and teaches others to do so also. Least in the kingdom was granted to those who do not and teach others not to keep the law.
Jesus then concluded the teachings by touching on anger, adultery and divorce, vows and revenge, and true love. If one is angry in their heart without a cause, they’ve practically already killed.
Body Follows the Mind
If they have lusted after a woman in heart, they’ve practically already committed adultery. Jesus made it clear writing a bill of divorcement was never permitted from the beginning.
The only reason permitted for divorce was fornication. The Son of God repeated the importance of allowing your word to be your word, and to avoid making vows, especially to God.
Lastly, revenge is the LORD’s, we are to focus on love, loving even our deepest enemies as this is how we move towards perfection. And the goal is to be perfect, even as our Father, who is in Heaven is perfect.
