Chapter 2 of Genesis begins with the report of the completion of the heavens and earth and everything hosted in them. After everything was finished, God then rested on the seventh day from all his work and blessed the seventh day.
The chapter then transitions into the generations of the heavens and the earth, giving specific details of what took place in Genesis chapter one, but from the beginning of day six (see our study on that for further clarification).
The Lord God formed the man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul. The man was housed in a garden called Eden, where there was planted every tree good for food, including the tree of life.
Genesis Chapter 2 Summary
There also was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The location of the garden is given also, by the identification of four rivers, Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel, and the Euphrates. The man was told to dress and keep the garden by the Lord God and was told to eat freely from the garden.
The man was however forbidden from eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In fact, if this was done, the man would be condemned to death. The chapter winds down with the Lord God noting that the man should not be alone but should have a companion.
The animals of the field were created but were not found to be a suitable help. They lacked true companionship for the man. Thus the Lord God took it a step further.
The Lord God created a woman from the man and presented her to the man and the man was satisfied. Adam said, she is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh and the two will be one.
This is the summary of Genesis chapter two.
