The Birthright Transaction of Jacob and Esau

The Birthright Transaction of Jacob and Esau: Jacob’s name represented his character and Esau’s name did likewise. The days when people named their children after their characteristics and not by how much they liked a certain name. Jacob came out on top in the birthright transaction and this redirected the course of life forever.

Genesis 25:27-34 KJV

[27] And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. [28] Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. [29] And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

[30] And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage ; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. [31] And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. [32] And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

[33] Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. [34] Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

Brief Comments

This is a monumental story in the history of the bible. The boys grew up and were different in nature. Esau was an outdoorsman, while Jacob was a plain man staying indoors mainly. As for the parents, Isaac was more fond of Esau, while Rebekah loved Jacob.

As an adult, Esau was faint one day and thought himself to die. In this, Jacob moved him to sell the rights to his birthright to him.  Esau despised his birthright privilege and sold it to Jacob in exchange for the red pottage of lentils and meat that Jacob cooked up.

Esau obviously only thought about this life and not the life to come thus he did not believe in the ALMIGHTY. To sell his birthright would show a lack of faith, trust, and understanding in the GOD of his fathers, Abraham and Isaac. The deal was finalized and Esau ate the pottage of lentils.

Ultimately, this makes Jacob the birthright son in which the elder, Esau, will now serve the younger, Jacob. GOD’s prophecy does not fall to the ground.
