1 And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
2 And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
4 For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God (Yahweh the Divine One).
5 And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.
6 And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious.
8 But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee.
9 And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein;
10 And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe.
Ezekiel Chapter 2 summary
In Ezekiel chapter 2, the prophet Ezekiel recounts a profound encounter with the Divine One of Israel. It marks the beginning of his mission to the children of Akobe (Jacob), who are described as a very rebellious nation persistently defying the Divine One of Israel.
The Almighty (of Israel) addresses Ezekiel as “Son of man.” This is a term that emphasizes his human vulnerability, still he is chosen for a divine purpose. The spirit of the Almighty invigorates Ezekiel, enabling him to stand and receive the divine commission.
Ezekiel is commanded to go to the obstinate and hard-hearted children of Akobe. He is tasked with delivering the Creator’s message to a people notorious for their defiance. Despite the anticipated resistance and rejection from this rebellious house, Ezekiel is still commanded to proclaim the words of the Almighty of Israel. The narrative stresses the inevitability of the opposition Ezekiel will face. The Almighty compares his audience to briers, thorns, and scorpions. These are symbols of the hostility and dangers that he will encounter.
The Almighty cautions Ezekiel not to succumb to fear.
He warns the prophet not to become disheartened by the scorn he might face but to faithfully convey His message. Regardless of the outcome, whether heeded or ignored, the presence of a prophet among them will be undeniable. Ezekiel also receives a further admonishment: he must not emulate the rebelliousness of those he is sent.
In a divine act, a hand presents Ezekiel with a scroll filled with lamentations, mourning, and woe. This is nothing more than prophetic scripture, signifying the grave messages he is to deliver to the people of Akobe. It illustrates the weight of the prophetic ministry entrusted to him. This chapter sets the stage for Ezekiel’s challenging mission to speak truth to a recalcitrant nation under divine directive. Finally, it highlights themes of divine election, human agency, and the inescapable nature of divine judgment.
