Reframe: Genesis 3 – Your Eyes Will Be Opened

There was a serpent and the serpent was more cunning than all of the unreasoning beasts of the earth. The serpent asked the woman, “Has God said you should not eat of every tree of the garden? Why has God commanded you not to eat from any tree in the garden?”

The woman responded to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden, but the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, we should not eat.” She continued, God has said you will not eat of it or touch it unless you die.” The serpent then said to the woman, “you will not surely die by death.

God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.” The woman saw that the tree was good and sweet for food. Also, it was fair and pleasant to the eyes; it was a delight to behold, not to mention it had to ability to make one wise. She took the fruit of it and ate.

Your Eyes Will Be Opened

With that, she also gave to her husband and he also ate. Both of their eyes were opened and they knew that they were naked. Thus they went and sewed fig leaves and made aprons for themselves. Late one afternoon, they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden during the evening breeze.

Adam and his wife hid from the face of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. The Lord God called out for Adam saying, “Where are you, Adam?” Adam answered, “I heard your voice in the garden of paradise, and I dreaded because I was naked, so I hid.” To whom the Lord said, “Who told you that you were naked; have you eaten from the tree that I strictly commanded to you not to eat from?”

Adam said, “The woman you gave to me for fellowship, she gave me to eat and I did eat.” The Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done? Why did you do this?” The woman answered, “The serpent deceived me and so I ate.”

Greatly Multiply Your Sorrow and Conception

Thus the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all living things, all unreasoning beasts, and you will go upon your belly eating the dust of the earth all the days of your life. In addition, I will place enmities between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. She will break your head, and you will set ambushes to her heel, bruising it.”

The Lord God said to the woman, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and conception. In sorrow will you bear children and you will be under the power of your husband. Your husband will be lord of you. Your desire will be to your husband and he will rule over you.” Then the Lord God addressed Adam and said, “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and ate of the tree that I commanded you not to eat; the ground is cursed.

The earth is cursed on your account because of your rebellion. Only after much labor will you get food from it all the days of your life upon it. The earth will bring thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the herb of the field. By the sweat of your face will you earn your bread all your days until you return to the earth.

Keeping the Tree of Life…

Your Eyes Will Be Opened

Then you will return to the earth which you were taken out of; because dust you are and to dust you also will return.” After this, Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. Also, the Lord God made coats of skins and clothed Adam and his wife.

The Lord God said, See the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil. He can attempt his hand to take also from the tree of life and live without end. Therefore the Lord God sent Adam out of the Garden of Eden to work the earth, from which he was taken.

Adam was driven out of the garden of Eden. Adam was out and God settled cherubims in the east of the garden. That is God gave it into the keeping of angels with a sword of flames turning each way to keep the way of the tree of life.
