Judges Chapter 9 Summary Part 1

Judges chapter 9 summary had to be done in two part. Part 1 began with that one son of Jerubbaal, Abimelech, who was crafting a swift takeover of family leadership.

He went to get the men of Shechem behind him, using family as his campaign message.

They agreed and gave him money, which he used to hire vain and light thugs to be his enforcement crew. He goes to his father’s house at Ophrah, killing all his brothers, except one who hid himself. The one who hid was named Jotham.

Judges Chapter 9 Summary Part 1

Abimelech was made king by the men of Shechem, and Jotham heard of it. Jotham campaigned against the evilness of Abimelech to the people of Shechem. He painted a nice picture of what evil Abimelech did.

Jotham reminds them what his dad, Gideon, did for them against Midian, and the evil they condoned by Abimelech, and if they are okay with it, God judge. Abimelech was considered an outsider to the Jerubbaal tribe because his mother wasn’t an official wife.

Abimelech’s mother was a housemaid, so unfortunately his brothers that he killed treated him like an outsider, even though they had the same father.

After Jotham’s speech, he went into hiding, but three years later, three years into Abimelech’s rule, God wakes up righteousness.

We will continue part 2 from here. What will happen to Abimelech?

We pray the Father to add blessings to the reading and doing of His Holy Word through His Son Jesus the Messiah. Amen!
