Judges Chapter 20 Summary Part 1

Judges Chapter 20 Summary Part 1

Chapter 20 begins with the tribes of Israel being distraught over the evil done against the Levite and his concubine in the previous chapter.

They gathered together to see what justice can be done. They gathered 400,000 footmen ready with the sword.

The Levite was told to recount the story and he told his story before the tribes and asks their counsel. All the tribes committed to bringing about justice and went against the town of Gibeah knit together like one man.

They asked the tribe of Benjamin to deliver up the evil men to be put to death who did this lewd and vile thing against the Levite and his concubine.

The Benjamites were not having any of it; in fact, they came out to war with anyone trying to do anything by force on this matter. Tempers are rising!

The Benjamites brought 26,000 who drew the sword, and had 700 who could sling stones better than King David (we’re actually not sure about that). It said they “could sling stones at an hair breadth and NOT miss.”

Before they went to battle, the children of Israel asked God who should go up to battle first. God replied Judah! They went up and got crushed.

Crushed and defeated, the second time they asked God, should we go up to battle? God replied they should. They were crushed again. They loss 40,000 men in two days!!
