Genesis 46: Israel and Family Go Down Into Egypt

Joseph sends for the rest of the family; here is how it went. Israel recovered from the shock and surprise that Joseph, his son, was alive and ruling in Egypt. After this, he settled himself to go into Egypt and see Joseph himself.

He offered sacrifices to GOD and also received confirmation that he should make the journey. The LORD GOD spoke to him in a night vision. HE assured Jacob should have no fear or doubts in going down into Egypt. The LORD GOD told Jacob that HE would make him a great nation and will be with him in Egypt.

The great GOD would also bring Jacob up out of Egypt and he would see his son Joseph again. Israel arose and went into Egypt, 70 souls, 67 from Canaan; Joseph and his two sons who were already in Egypt.

Israel in the Land of Goshen

Thirty-one souls from Leah, Zilpah (Leah’s handmaid) had sixteen souls; from Rachel fourteen souls came, and from her handmaid, Bilhah were seven souls. Judah was sent before Israel to represent the family to Joseph and the Egyptians.

Finally, after years on that fateful day when Jacob asked Joseph to go check on his brothers and he never came back home, they finally unite. They embraced and cried on each other’s shoulders a good while.

Joseph prepared his brothers and father on how to encounter the Pharaoh. They had to learn what to say, and all that political cosmetic formalities. He had to groom and prepare them because the Egyptians hated keepers of sheep (Genesis 46).

Principle: Trusting in the LORD. Even if it is not in this life, keep your faith and trust in HIS Word. This way HE may give you your heart’s desires. Joseph and Israel received theirs.

History: Israel and his sons are now in Mizraim (Egypt). Joseph is the governor of Egypt and the sons of Israel will proliferate in Egypt into a great nation This is what the LORD wanted them to be when HE sought Abraham after the Tower of Babel. Some historians believe the Hyksos are the Shemite shepherd kings written in the annals of Egyptian history.

Prophecy: The seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, will now use Egypt to turn themselves into a great nation.
