Woe to Them That Draw Iniquity with Cords of Vanity: While the earth is being humbled, the arrogant and lofty are drinking humble juice, the LORD will be exalted. The LORD ALMIGHTY of Hosts will be exalted in judgment and the Elohim that is holy will be sanctified in righteousness.
Lambs will graze in their own pastures and strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy. Woe to them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity and deceit. They pull sin along with a cart with ropes, woe to them.
They say, “Let Him hurry and speed up His work so we can see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come to pass, so we may know it!” Woe to them that call evil good and good evil and those who put darkness as light and light for darkness.
Flames Consumes the Chaff
They say bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter; woe to them who are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight. Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and champions in mixing strong drinks together.
Yes, those who justify the wicked for a bribe and deprive the innocent of due justice, woe to them. Because of this, like fire devours the stubble and the flame consumes the chaff so will their roots decay; their blossoms will blow away.
They have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Therefore the anger of the LORD is lit against His people. He has stretched His hand against them and crushed them.
Calling the Nations
The mountains quaked and their dead bodies lay torn in the middle of the streets. Still, for all of this, His anger is not turned away but His hand is stretched out still over His people.
The ALMIGHTY will lift up a banner for the distant nations; He will whistle for those at the ends of the earth. Wow, look how speedily and swiftly they come. None of them of the nations will get weary or stumble, neither will they slumber or sleep.
No belt they wear is loose and no sandal strap is broken. Their arrows are sharp and their bows bent and ready. The horses of them, hoofs will be counted like flint. They roar like that of a lion, even a young lion.
Darkness and Distress
They growl and seize their prey, they carry it away from any deliverance. On that day, they will roar against them like the roaring of the sea. Insomuch, if one looks over the land, he will see darkness and distress; even the light will be obscured by the clouds of heaven.
Hear the words of the Sovereign LORD of Hosts.
Chapter Remarks
The second portion of Isaiah’s chapter 5 provides a unique look at the children of Israel’s plight. The first half ended with the vineyard being so terrible that the ALMIGHTY backed off protecting and defending it.
From this hell enlarged herself and opened her mouth without measure upon the vineyard. The vineyard in this parable was declared to be the house of Israel, with the pleasant planting being the men of Judah.
They will all be humbled as distress and calamities fall upon them. The children of Israel wanted destruction and they got it; the sons of Jacob wanted to live justifying the wicked for reward, they got it. The men of Judah wanted to live the life where they drink wine and strong whiskey from morning to night, hurting people along the way.
A Humbling Experience
The children of Israel’s leaders and multitudes despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Thus, the anger of the LORD of Hosts was kindled against them and He stretched forth His hand against them He struck them and even called the nations to come and strike them.
Do you know one of the most belittling things a parent, officer, or anyone of authority can do? In the parent’s case, the parent commands the youngest sibling to come and strike the oldest in the face and spit upon them.
An officer would command a lower rank or even a nonofficer to tar and feather his top officers for their disobedience. This is what the Sovereign LORD did with His people Israel. He hissed for the nations to come and beat the fear of ELOHIM back into them.
Remember Mercy O Sovereign LORD
It was not a pretty sight, beginning with Assyria and also with Babylon. The Israelites live now, collectively, in darkness and sorrow, awaiting the day of their collective deliverance. Praise the LORD for His grace and mercy.
