The Generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s Son

Greetings and welcome; you may ask why do you need to know the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son. It’s important to know Abraham had many sons, Ishmael was his first, but not of Sarah.

He only had one child with his beloved Sarah, which was Isaac. Keturah and Hagar had the rest and they all will be blessed but the birthright and covenant blessings were passed to Isaac. Let’s get the details:

Genesis 25:12-18 KJV

[12] Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bare unto Abraham: [13] And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

[14] And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, [15] Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: [16] These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.

[17] And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. [18] they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.

Brief Comments

Ishmael is an integral part of society, the world, and modern human history. Although not the son of the covenant, his father is still Abraham in the flesh. His mother was the bondwoman, Hagar, an Egyptian. Ishmael had twelve sons; they are known as twelve princes according to their nations.

The son of Hagar lived a full 137 years before being gathered to his people. As a family, the Ishmaelites stayed between Havilah to Shur. This is before one goes into Egypt and before Assyria on the opposite side.
