Psalm chapter 1 summary is a wisdom psalm; psalm is the Greek word for songs or praises. It is from the Greek word “psalmos.” The entire book is songs or praises by the author to the Great Creator for His wonderful works to the children of men. Psalm Chapter 1 establishes the tone for the entire Book of Psalms. Right out of the gate chapter 1 contrasts the ways of the righteous against those of the wicked.

The chapter emphasizes the importance of choosing the path of righteousness. The psalm began by describing the endowed-ness of the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand in or align themselves with the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers. Instead, their delight is in the law of the Great Spirit, and they meditate on His law day and night.

Great imagery of a flourishing tree planted by streams of water to illustrate the gifts of the righteous is utilized by the author. The righteous are compared to a tree that bears fruit in its season, with their lives characterized by prosperity and spiritual vitality. This prosperity is not only in material wealth but in spiritual wealth, followed by possibly material. In contrast, the wicked are described as chaff (or debris and waste) that the wind blows away, having no stability or lasting value.

Psalm Chapter 1 Summary

The psalm concluded by declaring that the Great Creator watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked exclusively leads to their destruction. Clearly, this psalm serves as a reminder of the importance of following the Great Creator’s law and seeking His guidance in all aspects of life.

Overall, Psalm Chapter 1 sets the foundation for the themes of righteousness and meditation on the Creator’s law. Also the contrasting fates of the righteous and the wicked, which are further examined throughout the Book of Psalms.
