They Have Moses and the Prophets

Welcome or welcome back to BibleStudyMinistry.com – an online Bible study for Christians interested in studying and learning more about Jesus within the pages of the Bible. This week’s Sabbath Bible study is titled They Have Moses and the Prophets.

This study comes from the quote Jesus made in Luke chapter 16 in a parable regarding afterlife rewards and punishments. It is very thought-provoking and thus I had the desire to write about it. Let’s begin by taking a look at the parable and then break down the very important scripture Jesus tells us today!

Luke chapter 16

Everyone knows this story, a rich man would see this man named Lazarus who was poor and a beggar just wanting crumbs to eat to sustain, however, the rich man never laid a helping eye on Lazarus. He did not help Lazarus.

Well as time has it and as the parable tells it, when the beggar died he was taken to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man died and was buried. We’re not going to teach on this today but do not run with the globe on this one, please.

When the rich man looked up, he realizes he is in hell (lake of fire) and across the way, he sees Abraham and Lazarus, the poor beggar with Abraham. The rich man begs (who’s the beggar now) Abraham to order Lazarus to bring him just a drop of water to quench him.

The Tables are Turned

Abraham instead reminds the rich man of the extravagant and financially fruitful life he had prior to. Abraham also reminds the rich man how Lazarus struggled and he would offer no help. Now the tables are turned.

Besides all of this, there is a gulf fixed where those suffering in the lake of fire cannot come to those blessed in the bosom of Abraham and vice versa. The rich man knowing he cannot get out of this situation has a good heart and good intentions.

He requests Abraham allow Lazarus to go to his father’s house to testify to his brothers that “this stuff is real.” In other words, the rich man was trying to tell Abraham to allow Lazarus to turn his brothers from the lavish-don’t-care-about-the-world-and-needy-people lifestyle they were probably living as well.

They Have Moses and the Prophets…

Abraham told the rich man that his brothers have Moses and the prophets; “they have Moses and the Prophets.” This is a very profound statement. We want to gently understand all that is being said in this significant statement by Jesus in this parable.

In reality, it is very simple. If you want to avoid the torments that await all evildoers, you must take serious heed to all that Moses, the great prophet of the Lord, wrote. In addition, you must also heed all that the prophets have written.

Moses and the prophets will tell you many things that pertain to eternal life, but let’s look at the main message we should receive from Moses and the prophets.

Exodus chapter 20: We know the Ten Commandments that we are to keep them and do them. This was presented by Moses.

Jeremiah chapter 7: Jeremiah wrote that God only commanded us to obey His voice. This is all we needed in order to be called His people and for Him to be our God. We need to walk in His ways that God has commanded for things to be well for us.

There is more…

Deuteronomy 5:33

1st Samuel 15:22

Zechariah 6:15

Isaiah 56:6

Psalm 128:1

The Covenant of the Lord is His Commandments, and keeping the Lord’s commandments is to obey His voice. We have to read Moses and prophets to learn how to walk in the ways of the God of Israel.

Psalm chapter 119:1-3

Blessed are the undefiled that walk in the law of the Lord! Again, you would have to have dealt with Moses and the prophets and learn the law in order to walk in them. Solomon, the great king in Israel tells us that the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12 v13).

These are what Moses and the prophets teach us. Even when we go into the testimony, which is the New Testament, we see Jesus teaching and saying the same thing:

St John chapter 14 v15

Moses and the prophets taught the keeping of the Lord’s commandments. This is important because many Christians today believe the Old Testament is done away with! However, Jesus contested that by telling us in the parable that they have Moses and the Prophets.

Keeping the commandment would have helped the rich man’s behavior towards Lazarus because the commandments are about showing love to our fellow brothers and sisters in the world and keeping the ways of the God of Israel.

Going back to the rest of the parable regarding Moses and the prophets says:

Luke chapter 16 v29-31

Abraham tells the man that his brothers have Moses and the prophets and they should hear what Moses and prophets have to say. The rich man knew that they would ignore what Moses and the prophets had to say, as he did, and would rather believe if someone from the dead came to them.

However, Abraham was not buying that story. He told the rich man that if they do not listen and hear Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded even if one rose from the dead. The Bible actually says, “Though one rose from the dead.”

The one that rose from the dead was Jesus Christ and people all around the world are not persuaded by this at all. It is because they have not really heard and believed Moses and the prophets.

Believe All That Moses Gave

Jesus says if we do not believe all that Moses gave, how can we believe on Jesus? Jesus is the one who gave Moses and the prophets the words we read, so if you do not regard their words, you will not regard Jesus’ words either.

The lesson is to strongly remind you and if it is for the first time, to strongly encourage you to embrace the teachings of Moses and the prophets of God. If you are not persuaded by Moses and the prophets teaching, you will not be persuaded by anything else in this world regarding salvation through Jesus Christ.

I hope this study was edifying and I pray your strength in the God of Israel in Jesus’ name, amen.
