God Determined to Rule Israel
Hosea offers us some detail on what God thought about the children of Israel asking for a king outside of Himself in their early days. Today, Christians do not need to imagine how God feels about thinking or asking for a king we can see. We already know.
All we have to do is read the scriptures below from Hosea chapter 13:
9 O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.
10 I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
11 I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
God declares to the rebellious house of Israel (the house of Jacob) that they have destroyed themselves, yet in their destruction, they can still receive help from their incredibly merciful God. Why? It’s because God is determined to be their King.
God Gave Israel a king Reluctantly
The King asks the house of Jacob, where are the judges that asked Samuel the prophet for a king and for princes like the other nations? Where are they now? Further, God gave Israel a physical king and kings, grudgingly, as in not in His plans.
God did this just so they can see the immense mistake it was to have a man as their king instead of God.
Some Bible critics say, ‘if God knew better, why did He hearken to the house of Jacob’? God is a very reasonable Being. It is like a child who claims to want cookies and candy for dinner and pass on the plate of chicken, bean lentils, and veggies.
Children of Israel, Hard-Head Group?
An hour or less later, when the ignorant or foolish child wants more food to eat because they are still hungry, that is the time they are reminded of their choice to eat the nutrient-less candy and snacks over the real nutrient-rich meal.
The parent knows better but allows the child to feel the consequence of their decision so they can make better ones in the future. Also, they will trust their parent more as they move forward, at least they should. In addition, sometimes you just have to let a hard head, hit the ground a few times.
The children of Israel were a hard-headed group of people, and I am quoting God in saying that. So anyone from the house of Jacob, don’t take offense in me, I am quoting the Lord who originally said Israel is a stiffnecked people who will not listen to the command of their God.
