Deuteronomy Chapter 19 Summary
Chapter 19 of Deuteronomy begins the dividing of the land for the children of Israel.
When Israel captured the land God gave them, they were commanded to separate three cities in the land for the slayer.
This is a person who killed someone ignorantly or accidentally. This is where he or she must go live for the time being, in one of the city’s designated for the accidental slayer.
They would remain there until the death of the current high priest.
This is for their protection in case the avenger (a deeply emotionally wounded family member) see them, and gets hot (extremely emotionally angry) and decide to kill them.
On the other hand, if someone hated their neighbor and waited to kill their neighbor and thought he could flee to this city, the priests and elders were not let it be so. They would send and fetch him to bring him to his death.
Another part of this chapter is on witnessing.
You couldn’t sentenced someone to death with only one witness. At the mouth of two or more witnesses would a matter be established.
Lastly, in this chapter, if a false witness came up against a man to testify against him, both men should stand before the Lord through His priests and judges.
The judges would make diligent inquisition and if it is found that the false witness was indeed false, then whatever would have been the judgement against his brother that he brought up falsely, would be put on him.
This way people ease up on falsely accusing people. This is chapter 19 of Deuteronomy.
We pray the Father to add blessings to the reading and doing of His Holy Word through His Son Jesus the Messiah. Amen!
