David’s kingdom grew stronger and stronger, while Saul’s house grew weaker. The house of Saul grew weak by way of poor management, poor leadership, and most important, God’s doing. At this time, David begins to have more children with his wives. It is recorded he was up to six children.

Yes, David was a ladies’ man as well as a warrior.

Abner, the chief guard of Saul, had a fallout between Ishbosheth (Saul’s remaining son and the son who took over the kingdom) over a concubine of Saul. This caused Abner to resign from Ishbosheth and Saul’s house.

He actually began to campaign to join Israel under the house of Judah and David. And people thought LeBron James leaving to Miami and Kevin Durant, leaving to the enemy (Golden State Warriors) was a new thing.

Abner sent messengers to David’s team to make a league with him. David required that Abner first bring back Michal, his first wife, and Saul’s daughter, in order for David to allow the allegiance of Abner and the remaining houses of Israel.

Ishbosheth does exactly as David desired because he had no arms since Abner was not with him. Michal was given to another man when David fled Saul, and David’s admin had to yank Michal from her current husband, who went weeping after her, but there was nothing he could do. He is lucky David didn’t have him killed.

Abner on the Campaign Trail

Abner’s politics and campaigned to get all of Israel behind David and in doing so, David makes him a feast to coronate him joining the team.

Joab, David’s chief guard, wasn’t there during the acceptance of Abner, but when he heard of the league made between David and Abner, he was upset that David would allow it. He told David, Abner was only there to spy.

Joab then chased Abner down and held a secret meeting with Abner, as he and his brother Abishai killed Abner (without David’s knowledge or approval). David put the blood on Joab and his house forever.

David gave Abner a proper burial and all the Benjamites and Israel saw that David was sincere and wasn’t behind the assassination of general Abner. According to David, Israel lost a great man in the death of Abner.

This is the summary of 2nd Samuel chapter 3.
