The Riches of Damascus and Spoil of Samaria Shall Be Taken Away – Isaiah 8 Reframe: More than that, the LORD ALMIGHTY said to me, “Take a large scroll and writing on it with an ordinary stylus: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”
I appointed for myself trustworthy witnesses to record; Uriah the priest, even Zechariah, the son of Jeberechiah. I went to the prophetess and she conceived and gave birth to a son. The LORD ALMIGHTY said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.
Before the boys know how to cry, “Father or mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away by the king of Assyria.”
Waters Up to the Neck
Again, the LORD ALMIGHTY spoke to me, “As much as these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoiced in Rezin and the son of Remaliah, the LORD ALMIGHTY will surely bring against them the mighty rushing waters of the Euphrates; the king of Assyria and all his pomp.
It will overflow the channels and run over its banks. The waters will pour into Judah, swirling and sweeping over it; it will reach up to the neck. It will spread its streams and cover your entire land, O Immanuel.
Associate yourselves, O people, huddle together and you will be broken into pieces. Pay attention all of you in distant lands, prepare for battle, and be broken into pieces. Prepare all you want and can, and be dismayed and broken in pieces.
A Conspiracy of Confederacy
Take counsel together and devise a plan; it will come to nothing because the ALMIGHTY is with us. Because this is what the Sovereign LORD spoke to me with a strong hand, instructing me not to walk in the way of these people.
“Don’t say, a conspiracy confederacy, like all the people, will say about the conspiracy confederacy. Also, do not fear the fear that they will fear and do not live in dread or be afraid.”
The Sovereign LORD of Hosts is the One to regard as holy. Only the Sovereign LORD should be feared and only He should be dreaded, and He will be a sanctuary for you.
Place Your Trust in the ALMIGHTY
However, to both houses of Israel (Judah and Samaria), He will be a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, a trap, and snare, He will be to the dwellers of Jerusalem.
Many of them will stumble over the stumbling blocks; they will fall and be broken; they will be ensnared and captured. Bind up the testimony, seal the law among My disciples. I will wait for the LORD of Hosts, who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob.
I will put my trust in Him. Here am I, and the children the Sovereign LORD has given me to be signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of Hosts, who dwells in Mount Zion.
The Day of Ruins Will Come for the Wicked
When men tell you to consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who whisper and mutter, shouldn’t a people consult their Elohim instead? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Stay to the law and to the testimony!
If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. They will roam the land dejected and hungry. When they are famished, they will become enraged and look upward, they will curse their king and the Elohim.
Then they will look to the earth and see only distress and darkness and gloom of anguish. They will be driven into utter darkness. This is what the Sovereign LORD of Hosts says.
Chapter Remarks
This chapter is startling because it tells a story of two separate times and maybe more. Judah and Samaria are rejecting the LORD of Hosts during the days of Isaiah’s prophesying. They are also doing the same today.
The story is the same, the people change, but the story same. In Isaiah chapter 8, it appears Isaiah had a son with the prophetess at that time; before the boy could be able to talk, Damascus and Samaria would have been overrun by the Assyrians.
The children of Israel and Judah rejected the slowly and gently flowing waters of Shiloah. The MOST-HIGH parabolically equated the waters surrounding their lands to His Word and His ways.
Broken into Pieces
They rejected that, instead chose the rushing violent waters of Rezin and Remaliah’s son in Syria and Samaria. For this, the waters will overflow and drown them. It will come up even to the neck. It will pour into Judah and cover the land.
No matter if they associate themselves together, they will still be broken into pieces. The Sovereign LORD said this three times to confirm it.
There were so many beautiful remarks by the ALMIGHTY; one reminded the Israelites then and now, even all people no to fear or be afraid as others are afraid. Isaiah was told this; we should fear the ALMIGHTY only and keep to the law and to the testimony.
Stumbling Blocks for the Unbelieving
This is the only way to know if there is any truth in anyone; they will abide by the law of Elohim and the testimonies. Here are they who fear Elohim, they keep His commandments (law) and have the witness or testimony of Jesus Christ.
Stay in the LORD ALMIGHTY, even in troublous times, He will be a sanctuary for those who trust in Him. But to the unbelieving and the wicked, He will be a stone of stumbling and rock of offense.
The word of God (Elohim) will be used as gins and snares and we see this in the churches, synagogues, and mosques all the time. Seek the LORD ALMIGHTY, not wizards, familiar spirits, and necromancers who mutter and use witchcraft and black magic.
The last two verses speak volumes; cling to the LORD ALMIGHTY before the day comes when you will not know what to do, what has happened, and anguish and darkness cover the entire world. Seek the light now!
