The Midwives Feared God

The Midwives Feared God: In Exodus chapter 1 and verse 17 it says the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them… When the king of Egypt ordered for the midwives to kill the male children of the Hebrews, the midwives declined.

They decline because they had a fear of God more than a fear of mankind. They were rewarded for their wisdom as read in verse 20 where it says:

20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

The midwives were given houses and prosperity through their fear of God.

21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

the beginning of wisdom and knowledge

Some of us today are not keeping our faith and healthy fear of God. Sometimes this may cost us blessings suppose to come our way. It says in Proverbs chapter 1, the fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge.

The fear of the Lord and the mentioning of His Holy name will prompt the Lord God of Israel to jot your name in His book of remembrance as written in Malachi chapter 3 and verse 16.

God will do this for those who fear Him and think often of His name. Today people are moving away from the fear of the Lord and trying to replace fear with love only. However, in the scripture it is stated to fear God because this is how you learn to remove certain behaviors that offend God.

The midwives Feared God… The Fear of the Lord is Good

As you fear the Lord, you actually hate evil acts. It is written in Proverbs chapter 8 verse 13 that the fear of the Lord is to hate EVIL; it is also to hate pride and arrogance and the evil way.

Again, in Proverbs chapter 3 verse 7 it says, be not wise in your own eyes, only fear the Lord and depart from evil. Being wise in your own eyes is to say something like, “it is not healthy or good to fear anything, especially God.”

It is not healthy or good to fear anything except for the fear of the Lord.

In Proverbs chapter 16 verse 6 it says, ‘by Mercy and by truth sin or iniquity is purge and by the fear of God men depart from doing evil. Just think of the child who listens and obeys their parents because of the fear or reverence towards them. This is the same type of fear and reverence towards the Creator of the world we are to have.

Seek Understanding in All Things

In Job chapter 28 verse 28 it reads that the fear of the Almighty, it is wisdom and to depart from evil is to actually have understanding. When you get to a point where you are able to depart from doing evil acts, this is understanding. Because of your knowledge of what will happen and the consequences of those works it forces you to depart from evil. This is when you will have reached a level of understanding.

The scriptures tells us that we should seek knowledge. And we should seek wisdom but with all of our seeking we should seek understanding (Proverbs 4:7).

The midwives had a healthy level of understanding that they should not do the evil commanded them by men and we should avoid evil acts also by remembering and focusing on the fear of the Lord. Remember, fear God and keep His Commandments is the entire duty of mankind.
