2 Kings Chapter 13 Summary: Chapter Summaries

2 Kings chapter 13 summary began with King Joash of Judah and King Jehoahaz of Samaria (Israel). Jehoahaz ruled Samaria for seventeen (17) years and began in the twenty-third (23rd) year of King Joash’s reign in Judah.

Jehoahaz wasn’t righteous before the LORD. Instead, he followed in the footsteps of Jeroboam (who was credited for making Israel sin).

Because of Jehoahaz’s evil nature, the LORD made him and Israel subject to Hazael, the king of Syria, as well as to his son all of their days. Nevertheless, Jehoahaz did pray to God for relief, and God listened.

2 Kings Chapter 13 Summary

God saw the oppression Israel was suffering at the hands of Syria and gave some relief. Samaria only found a small amount of relief from God. Jehoahaz did do some good things, and they are written in the annals of the history of the kings of Israel.

The chapter then moved onto his son, King Jehoash, who took over the kingship after Jehoahaz’s death. King Joash of Judah was still in power in Judah. PLEASE do not get confused over the names of the kings in this chapter, because it is very easy to do.

Jehoash (Samaria’s king) came to power in Joash’s (Judah’s king) thirty-seventh (37th) year. He only reigned for sixteen years as he was very disobedient to the God of Israel. His sixteen-year rule was also recorded in the history of the kings of Israel.

Enter Elisha… and Exit Also

The chapter then transitioned to the prophet Elisha. Elisha, the great prophet of Samaria, fell sick and eventually died because of his illness. The king of Samaria came to visit the Prophet, and the king was told (by Elisha) that he would defeat Syria.

However, he would not as well as he could have had he had more confidence and zeal. Elisha eventually died and was buried. There was a story of the Moabites who attacked Samaria and a dead man was being buried in the grave of Elisha.

When the man’s corpse touched Elisha’s, he came back to life. Some prophet Elisha was. The chapter ended with Syria and their oppression of Israel.

However, the LORD was compassionate with Israel because of the covenant the LORD had with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jehoash was able to defeat Benhadad (Hazael’s son), three times to recover cities Syria had taken from Israel.

This was according to Elisha’s prophecy. This is the summary of 2 Kings chapter 13, glory to the ALMIGHTY YAH.
