2 Kings chapter 11 summary began with a devious and shrewd woman named Athaliah. Athaliah learned that her son, Ahaziah, the king of Judah, was killed. Instead of mourning, she decided to murder any relative who would have become king in his place.
She was even going to kill her own grandson, who was a little baby. Athaliah’s niece, Jehosheba, took Ahaziah’s son Joash and hid him from the grandmother massacre.
The boy was hid in the house of the LORD for six years, and it was during that time Athaliah ruthlessly took over the land of Judah. Jehoiada was a priest in the house of the LORD and in the seventh year of Athaliah’s dictatorship, he organized a coup.
2 Kings Chapter 11 Summary
He did this by first showing the leaders of the country, who were against Athaliah that Ahaziah had a surviving son. The moment came where they blew the trumpet and announced Ahaziah’s son as the new king.
The people shouted, “GOD SAVE THE KING!” Athaliah heard the commotion and she came over to the LORD’s temple. She saw everyone around the young king, the trumpeters rejoicing, she rent her clothing and yelled, “TREASON, TREASON!”
However, Jehoiada the priest commanded for her to be killed, away from the temple, along with anyone following her. Athaliah tried to escape, but she was caught and killed.
She wasn’t an official ruler because she wasn’t recognized and authorized by the LORD, but Judah did have a female dictator for six years.
The house and priests of Baal Destroyed
The chapter ended with Jehoiada the priest; he made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, for them all to be the LORD’s people under the king. The people broke down the house of Baal, killed priests of Baal, and appointed officers over the house of the Divine LORD.
Young Joash, now seven years old, was transferred from the LORD’s temple to the king’s palace. The people rejoiced, the city saw peace, and things returned to normal (as normal as it could be).
This is the summary of 2 Kings chapter 11, glory to the Highest GOD.
