1 Samuel Chapter 6 Summary

Continuing our chapter summaries, Chapter 6 of first Samuel begins with the Philistines calling in their diviners and priests to counsel on what they should do with the ark of God.

The ark of the covenant stayed in the country of Philistine for seven months, as plagues began to land upon them. They were counseled on what to do; send the God of Israel a trespass offering of five golden emerods and mice, according to the plague that was on them and their lords.

They were reminded not to harden their hearts, as the Pharaoh did in Egypt. If they didn’t, they would also be destroyed (as Egypt was). They did as they were counseled.

The Levites met them and took the ark of the Lord and made sacrifices to the Lord in the same day. Each of the five lords of the Philistines returned home, Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. The saga didn’t end for the men of Beth-shemesh as many of them began to look into the ark of the Lord.

Over 50K Smote by God

God smote 50,070 men because they peered to look into the ark of God. They send for the inhabitants of Kirjath-Jearim to retrieve the ark of God because it was harming them. This ark is become a hot potato until it goes back to where it is suppose to go.
