The king of Ammon, a king named Nahash, died and his son, a prince named Hanun, took over his rule. Upon hearing of the death of Nahash, king David of Israel decided to show kindness to the new king.

Chapter 10 began so pleasantly, but things went sour rather quickly. This is how it all went violently south in this chapter; first David sent ambassadors to comfort and mourn with the new king, and also sent him gifts.

David Plotting Against Hanun?

David was fond of his dad and his dad showed David love also. Because of the parents relationship, David decided to show support and love for Hanun, Nahash’s son.

However, Hanun’s servants figured David was plotting against Hanun with a way to spy and ambush Ammon. For this cause, Hanun had David’s servants embarrassed and sent away.

The method of embarrassment and shame used, was to shaved one side of their beards and cut holes in the buttock area of their garments. Keep in mind, these are prince’s and ambassadors of Israel for David the king.

The ambassadors return and report all to David.

After this, the Kingdom of Ammon figured their actions against David, a man of war, wouldn’t sit well with the warrior king, so they joined up with other nations just incase Israel (David) wanted to get physical.

He did!

He sent Joab to handle the battle. The Syrians were one of the nations called to help Ammon, but Joab and David were able to defeat them.

When the Syrians realized they could not help the children of Ammon defeat David and Israel, they feared to help the children of Ammon anymore in war.

All of this because they misread what the king of Israel was doing, simply being a concerned man. This is 2nd Samuel chapter 10 summary.
