The Head of Samaria is Remaliah’s Son – Isaiah Chapter 7 Reframed: Now in the days that Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin was king of Aram (Syria). Rezin marched up to wage war against Jerusalem.
He wasn’t by himself; he was accompanied by Pekah, the son of Remaliah, who was king of Israel. However, Rezin was unable to overpower the city. These things were told to the house of David.
When it became known that Aram was in league with Ephraim, the hearts of Ahaz and his people trembled like trees in the forest shaken by a gust of wind.
Rezin and Remaliah’s Son
That’s when the LORD ALMIGHTY said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son Shear-Jashub to meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit that feeds the upper pool. The one on the road to the fuller’s field, and say to him, “Calm down and be quiet.
Do not be afraid or fainthearted over these two smoldering stubs of firewood, over the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram, as well as, the son of Remaliah (Pekah). For Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah have plotted your ruin.
They say, ‘Let us invade Judah and terrorize and conquer it for ourselves. Then we can install the son of Tabeal over Judah as king.'” But this is what the Sovereign LORD ALMIGHTY says, “It will not happen; their counsel will not stand.
Search Sheol and Search the Heavens
Because the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five (65) years Ephraim will be shattered and will not be a people or nation. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand firm in your faith, then you will not stand at all.” Again the Sovereign LORD spoke to Ahaz and said, “Ask for a sign from the Sovereign LORD your Elohim; no matter from the depths of Sheol or the heights of Heaven.”
But Ahaz replied, “I will not ask; I will not tempt the LORD ALMIGHTY.” Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Must you also try the patience of my Elohim?
Syria and Samaria Will Be Desolate
Therefore the Sovereign LORD Himself will give you a sign; behold, the virgin will be with child and give birth to a son and she will call Him Immanuel. By the time he knows enough to reject evil and choose good, He will be eating butter curds and honey.
Before the boy knows enough to reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you are dreading will be laid waste. The Sovereign LORD will bring upon you, your people, and your father’s house a time unlike any since the day Ephraim departed from Judah.
He will bring the king of Assyria. On that day the LORD ALMIGHTY will whistle to the flies at the farthest streams of the Nile and to the bees in the land of Assyria.
Shave the Head and the Beard
They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and valleys, and in the clefts of the rocks, in all the thornbushes, as well as, in the watering holes. On that day the Sovereign LORD will use a razor that is hired, namely from beyond the Euphrates, the king of Assyria.
He will shave your head and the hair of your legs and will remove your beard too. On that day, a man will raise a young cow and two sheep, from the abundant milk they give, he will eat butter. That’s for all who remain in the land, they will eat curds of butter and honey.
Also on that day, in every place where there used to be a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, there will only be thorns and briers. Men will go there with bows and arrows because the land will be covered with thorns and briers.
Isaiah 7
Because of the thorns and briers, you will no longer enter the hills that were once tilled with a mattock. It will become places for oxen to graze and sheep to trample over.
Chapter Remarks
This is a unique chapter (Isaiah chapter 7) that provides some historical and prophetical recounts of what took place during the days of Ahaz. Ahaz ruled Judah for 16 years; he behaved like the kings of Israel.
He was doing the abominations of the nations the LORD threw out before the children of Israel came into the land. The story here picks up as Ahaz and the people of Judah feared the potential attack against them by the Syrians and Samarians (their brothers).
This was when the MOST-HIGH sent the prophet Isaiah to calm their nerves. The counsel of Syria (Aram) and Samaria wouldn’t stand according to the GOD of Israel. In fact, the MOST-HIGH said within 65 years, Samaria wouldn’t even be a people.
Remaliah’s Son
Historically speaking, Ahaz began his rule while Remaliah’s son (Pekah) was in his seventeenth year. Pekah must have been horrible because Isaiah only called him Remaliah’s son.
Nevertheless, Remaliah’s son ruled for another twelve years before his successor took over, which was Hoshea, the son of Elah. Hoshea only ruled Samaria nine (9) years before it was besieged by Shalmaneser king of Assyria.
That means in less than 22 years, Samaria was absolved as a nation. You can read this in the records within 2 Kings 16 and 17. This was why the ALMIGHTY told Ahaz and Judah not to worry about Rezin and Remaliah’s son.
Immanuel Prophecy
The LORD ALMIGHTY offered Ahaz to ask for proof this would take place. Ahaz refused to ask the LORD for a sign, but the Sovereign LORD gave him one anyway. It was the famous virgin will conceive prophecy; that was the sign, right there, and to name the son Immanuel.
It is a dual prophecy. Obviously lending itself to the Anointed Christ as it is told in Matthew 1 with Mary. However, we’ll see it was also for Ahaz to see in his generation.
The prophecy stated that before the boy would know to reject evil and accept the good, both Syria and Samaria would be laid waste. This means this had to be fulfilled back then as well as with Mary and the Anointed Christ.
