Spiritual drunkenness and vain scribes with pens can be broken down with the following example (hopefully). History has shown time after time of a great artist who while alive has little to no real recognition.
Then the artist dies before they get any kind of global or popular recognition for their art. All their life they produced their great art and no one or a very small audience took notice. Yet, once the artists died, everyone now looks into their work and magnifies it.
The value of their work goes up now and they are suddenly called geniuses and brilliant. Most are more recognized in death than they are alive. The value of their work has gone up because they are no longer here to produce more. The pen was vain while they were alive, but upon their death, people actually begin to see value and give credit and glory to their work.
Spiritual Drunkenness and Vain Scribes with Pens
In the Bible, the pen of the scribe has been in vain during the prophet’s life, and unfortunately after their life as well. This is because the nobleman and honourable man is famished. They won’t eat nor will they allow their congregants to eat. Thus, there is a famine in the land because the people simply refuse to read the words of the prophets, which were given by God.
In the book of Jeremiah chapter 8, the God of Israel asked why are these people of Jerusalem slidden back with an ongoing backsliding. They keep falling backwards and backwards until they look even worse than the very people they were originally sent to share and teach the Words of God towards.
I mean the word of God is there for them to read but they are still continuing to fall backwards in the word of God. Their knowledge gets worse and worse, instead of getting better in knowing the truth.
…the pen of the scribe is vain!
They aren’t getting better at applying the truth, and being able to share the truth of God with other people. Why is this? The reason for this is because Jerusalem and Judah were holding onto lies. They were and are refusing to return to the Lord their God and practice His ways.
An example of this is in the scripture where it reads “the dead know absolutely nothing (Ecc 9:5).” However the children of Israel and Christians today read this (or not) and ignore it. Instead they hold onto fabled stories that claim their deceased loved ones are fully aware in heaven smiling down.
Clearly the two are in contrast to each other; one must be false and the other truth. Believing the latter and ignoring the former makes the pen of the scribe vain. If Solomon were alive today, he’d pull out his hair, thinking he wrote all he wrote for nothing.
We have so much more to work with…
The God of Israel is listening to all of our conversations as God was listening to the people in Jerusalem’s conversation. And while God listened, God revealed that no one spoke right. Still no one speaks right, unless the quote and do right from the scriptures.
In Israel, nobody repented of their wickedness, no one even ask themselves what have they done? Everyone is walking their own course like a horse being guided into a battle without knowing where he is going. Nevertheless, the animals of the world all know what is going on for them.
They get it, but the people whom God has given His oracles, His promises, and His Divine Spirit to, they don’t know.
The people that have the word of God in their hand in the form of a Bible, do not know the judgment of the God of Israel.
The pen of the scribe is in vain and the wise men of the earth have rejected the word of God, therefore, the Lord asks, what wisdom is in these men?
See Jeremiah chapter 8:
5 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the Lord.
8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord; and what wisdom is in them?
Spiritual Drunkenness
The reason the pen is vain is because no one wants to read the Bible, as is, anymore. Everyone wants to read the Bible to benefit themselves or their personal beliefs. This is why there are so many doctrines in the world. In Christianity, there is a separational word known as denomination. A denomination is code word for saying, “this is the way we view the Word of God.” We cannot allow the pen of scribe to become vain. We should allow ourselves into spiritual drunkenness. Stay sober my friends, stay sober!
