This is a question Jehu the prophet during the days of King Jehoshaphat, asked Jehoshaphat.
Welcome to BibleStudyMinistry.com – Today we ask a question; Shouldest Thou Help the Ungodly?
Also, does this question apply to us in our generation? I certainly believe it does, of course with quantification. But first, let us get some background on Jehu and Jehoshaphat. In Second Chronicles chapter 19, Jehoshaphat went to war with Ahab, king over Israel (the ten tribes).
Going to war in an affinity with someone isn’t a big deal, but it is when the person is directly against your God (and if you’ve been shown how the results). In this war, God made it so the enemy came directly for Ahab. This wasn’t a war, it was more so an assassination mission dressed up in a war. This alone saved Jehoshaphat’s life.
2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Lord.
When King Jehoshaphat came home from that war in peace, Jehu the son of Hanani, came out and told him the wrath of God will be upon him if he continued to help the ungodly and love those that hate the Lord.
Jehoshaphat never went out to war again with the enemies of God, but he did try to do a business transaction with the son of Ahab, an enemy of God, which God gently sank to the ground.
So, the question is shouldest thou help the ungodly? Should we today help people who downright hate our God?
