16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

It becomes a wise thing for a king or a ruler to hearken to his people. For a long time, ruler-citizen relationships were based on the ruler having a harsh rule over his citizens.
The King Hearkened Not Unto Them
Today, rulership is supposed to be and is more often based on what the citizens want the ruler provides it. It is same with companies businesses and organizations. The reason why only makes sense; it is best for it to be this way because there are more numbers in the people than there is in the ruler.
Therefore, it becomes important to adhere to the people to keep them happy and willing to serve in unity for the greater good of the organization or nation. When it is not done this way it leaves room for people to rebel.
This is exactly what happened with Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, when he chose to adhere to the Council of his peers instead of the Council of the elders. He did not want to lighten the load of taxes on the people and their response was, “what do we have to do with David and the son of Jesse.”
The King Hearkened Not Unto Them
They all departed and went back to their own tents and separated themselves from the house of David. Of course this was done by the hand of God because of the sin of Solomon, but it gives us a big lesson that we can use all the way down to the organization of even our family.
A man must rule in love, he must be just, and he must rule in the fear of God all while adhering to his people not to himself alone.
God bless you today in the mighty name of Jesus Christ,
