Hi Welcome back to BibleStudyMinistry.com (BSM), today we’re going to briefly study Ecclesiastes 9, and glean some of what the God of Israel wants us to know through the words of Solomon, King over Israel. Let’s read the chapter!
Ecclesiastes 9
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.
2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.
8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.
13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
There is one event unto all: that they go to the dead. While alive, their heart or mind is full of evil and rioting; then afterwards, they die and are not. In verses four and five, it says there is hope for someone alive, hope of what; hope that they repent, get understanding about the world they live in, and turn to love their God. A living dog is better than a dead lion.
5For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
The dead do not know nothing, and I remember looking at a picture of my grandfather hanging in the house when I was a teenager and I thought to myself, I am struggling to live; my family has these struggles, why can’t granpa look down from Heaven and make something happen?
As the music artist said, “My life style was far from well, I could have wrote a book with the title, Age 12; I’m Going Through Hell;” and I’m thinking grandpa, help me, ask God to help our family, I mean you’re in heaven right? Nope, the dead know nothing. When you go and talk to someone asleep, their subconscious may pick up what you said while asleep, but consciously they know nothing.
The same is with people who die. When you talk to a dead person, God, their subconscious, hears, but they personally do not hear a thing you said. It is better to talk to God about the matter than the deceased. It is a painful thing to accept after many years of confused teaching; but I know it is better the way it is.
Imagine the dead in the concentration camps of the Jewish people who watched and were unable to do anything to help their people. Other world atrocities that the dead watching down from heaven were disengaged from being able to help. That is what you call suffering in the after life to watch a daughter get beaten by her abusive husband.
You have done all you could to watch your wife and protected her all your life and then she gets raped as she came home from visiting your burial site. It is better that they sleep and get the rest they’ve been waiting for until it’s time to see them again.
Live your life with your wife or women with your husband and enjoy every bit of it because it will end. 10Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. There are no jobs in the dust of the earth.
The finishing touches we should all take away in this Ecclesiastes 9, is that the living have it good because they have hope; but once dead, it is all over for you on this side of the creation (under the sun). The dead know nothing! The dead would have to know something in order to smile down from heaven. The last few things to remember is that we have one shot at life during the seven days God has given man, men enjoy your wife, women enjoy your husband, and whatever you find good to do for you, do it with all your might.
One thing is for sure, you’ll run into death if you live long enough, and that is something everyone will get that does not live until the return of the God of Israel. Be wise, be joyful, and be in servitude to the God of the Creation. We serve GOD by keeping His commandments, and serving our fellow mankind.
