Judah Mourns and the Cry of Jerusalem Has Gone Up, Jeremiah 14 Reframed, BibleStudyMinistry.com. This is the word of the Sovereign LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought; “Judah mourns and her gates languish.
Her people cry and wail for the land, the cry of Jerusalem has gone up. The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the city cisterns, but find no water. Their stewards return with empty jars; they are ashamed and humiliated; they cover their heads.
The ground is cracked and shattered because there is no rain; no water has fallen to the ground. The farmers are ashamed and dismayed; they cover their heads, even the deer in the field deserts her newborn fawn because there is no grass.
The ALMIGHTY Acting Like a Stranger?
Wild donkeys stand on barren heights; they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail because of the lack of pasture.” Although our iniquities testify against us, O Sovereign LORD, act for the sake of Your name.
Indeed, our rebellions are many; we have sinned against You, no doubts. O hope of Israel, its Savior in times of distress, why, why are You like a stranger in the land to us. You are like a traveler who stays but a night.
Why are You like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? Why O Sovereign LORD? Still, You are among us, O Most Mighty, and we are called by Your name. Please do not forsake us!
DO NOT Pray for “This” People!
This is what the Sovereign LORD says about “this” people; “Truly they love to wander, they have not restrained their feet. So the Sovereign LORD does not accept them; He will now remember their iniquity and visit their sins accounting them all.”
Then the Sovereign LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people. I don’t care if they fast and pray, I will not listen to their cry; although they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will finish them off by sword, famine, and disease.”
Then I, Jeremiah, replied, “Ah, Sovereign LORD Elohim! Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.”
False Prophets Not Sent by the Sovereign LORD
The Sovereign LORD replied, “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name; I did not send these prophets or appoint them, neither did I speak to them. They are prophesying to you a false vision, worthless divination, the futility and delusion of their own minds.
Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name, though I did not send them, and who say, ‘No sword, famine, or disease will touch this land.’ By the sword, famine, and disease will these very prophets meet their end!
And the people whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine, sword, and disease. There will be NO ONE to bury them or their wives, their sons, or daughters. I will pour out their own evil upon them.
O Sovereign LORD, Do You Hate Us?
You are to speak this word to them; “My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people has been shattered by a crushing blow. This is a severely grievous wound.
If I go out to the country, I see those slain by the sword; if I enter the city, I see those ravaged by famine! Both prophet and priest travel to a land they do not know.” Have You rejected Judah completely, O Most-High? Do You despise Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that we are beyond repair? We are beyond healing at Your hand. We hoped for peace, but no good has come, and we looked for the time of healing but there was only terror.
Remember Your Covenant and Mercies
Please, we acknowledge our wickedness, O Sovereign LORD, the guilt and sin of our fathers, we acknowledge them. Indeed, we have sinned against You. Please, for the sake of Your great name do not despise us; do not disgrace Your glorious Throne.
Remember Your covenant right now with us; please do not break it. Can the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies alone send showers? Is this not the work of Your hands, is it not You, O Sovereign LORD our ALMIGHTY?
So we put our hope in You, for You have done all of these things; forsake us not.
Chapter Remarks
The word of the Sovereign LORD here in Jeremiah 14 is finally going to get His people’s attention and even their repentance, but it is a bit too late.
From a prophetic view and timeline, this chapter seems to have taken place after the first or second wave of Babylon sweeping through Jerusalem. Judah was mourning, there was languish at their gates; they were black to the ground and the cry had gone up from them.
The economy was busted and a famine, a severe famine had set in. Their nobles and officials could find no water, even they were embarrassed and ashamed after telling the people everything would be okay against the words of the true prophets such as Jeremiah.
Iniquities Testifying Against Us
The ground was chapped up, they hadn’t had rain for about as long as California here in 2021. After the fact, always after the fact for the majority of people do they take heed, and so did the ALMIGHTY’s people.
The house of Judah prayed regarding their terrible sins; their iniquities testified against them. Now they ask for their sins to be remitted; now they ask the Sovereign LORD to make things good again for His great names’ sake.
Since they/we today are suffering, we tug on the legs of the hope of Israel, our Savior. He turned His face from Judah and Jerusalem; He behaved like a stranger in their land, He acted like He didn’t know them since they didn’t know Him.
Israel Can’t Sit Still
Yes, that’s cold, some might even say petty, but the Most-High calls it Elohim-style judgment; we get what we ask for. Judah and Jerusalem didn’t want their Creator when things were good, do not seek Him when things are miserably bad.
The ALMIGHTY responded to their prayer; have you ever seen people who can’t sit still in their house. On Monday their out with friends, Tuesday is girl’s night out, Wednesday they are out with the fellas. Thursday is the employer gathering, and Friday is a party at the club.
Over the weekend, they are looking for friends to go out of town with or have a gathering. They cannot sit in their homes and think, pray, meditate, or even contemplate why things are such.
Pending Disaster
If life gets too quiet or slow, they would almost jump out of a window or out of a moving car going 75 miles per hour. The children of Israel and Judah are and were the same way; they wander and love to do so.
They cannot refrain their feet from moving, primarily from one god to another, from one “attraction” to another. This is why the ALMIGHTY responded to them He will not accept them and will bring up all their sins and iniquity.
Christ said in the New Testament that removing demons required fasting and prayer, but here the Sovereign said He would not hear their cry, even when they fast. This meant they had one thing left; they would be consumed by the sword, which is violence, by famine, and pestilence, which is the disease.
Live Your Best Life Today, Scam Phrase
Jeremiah cried out that the people are deceived because of false prophets telling them everything is and would be okay. The Sovereign LORD said He did not know those prophets, in fact, those prophets spoke a false vision and divination of their own deceitful heart.
We are witnessing much here in our modern state, even in 2021. Pastors have said for years live your best life, but what will they do when what happened to Israel and Judah happens to the entire world?
The prophets who prophesy lies will get the worse of the evil prophecies coming upon the people. They will get the worse of the sword, the famine, and the disease. They and the children will be thrown in the streets with no one to bury them.
Pastors Won’t Know What Hit Them
In the end, we understand why Jeremiah wrote the book of Lamentations; he was told to tell how he felt about the destruction he witnessed. Tears ran down his cheeks day and night for the virgin daughter of his people.
We have to imagine, he is witnessing the city torn, bodies everywhere, sick and hungry to death children, and violence. He’d watched pastors and priests walking around dumbfounded after losing their whole family.
All Judah and Jerusalem can do at this point is lament, pray, acknowledge their wrongs and wickedness, and beg sweet beg for mercy and compassion. Get ready nations of the earth today, you will be doing much of the same if the nations do not repent and turn back to the ALMIGHTY Creator of Israel. Repent, because the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
