Previously on the History of Israel, the Philistines were told by their priest how to make amends with the Power of Israel. They were then ordered to hitch those cows to the new cart with the ark of God and the trespass offerings next to it.

Then send the cows on their way. If the cows headed back to Bethlehem Judah, then they knew the God of Israel did all the unpleasantries that were taking place in their country. If the cows went somewhere else, it was just bad luck to them.

The cows went straight to Beth Shemesh and when the children of Israel saw it approaching they started dancing and celebrating. The cows rested at a field of Joshua and stood there next to a great stone.

The people crushed the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD. There were Levites there who knew what to do, so they took the ark of the God of Israel down and set it up on that huge rock (stone)  the cows stopped at.
