2 Samuel Chapter 2 Summary: Chapter Summaries

2 Samuel Chapter 2 summary is where things changed for the good for Judah and even the world as we know it today. The chapter began as David asked the LORD what he should do?

The LORD had David go up to Judah, specifically the city of Hebron. The men there gladly anointed David as their captain and the official king over Judah. They also informed him of kindness shown to Saul, as some of them risked their lives to retrieve the former king’s body and properly burying him.

On the other side of things, Abner, Saul’s military captain (who survived the war), brought Ishbosheth, a son of Saul and made him king over the other 11 tribes of Israel. Ishbosheth was 40 years of age when he became king in Israel, but he would only govern two years over the tribes.

2 Samuel Chapter 2 Summary

The house of Judah followed David as he was king in Hebron for seven and half years. Abner and his men met with Joab and David’s servants and they let the young men fight in front of them as they watched, kinda to see who were stronger warriors.

All twenty-four (24) of them died, as they killed each other in this contest fighting to the death. Once this was done, Joab and his men put Abner and his men to chase.

Now Joab’s brother was fast and he chased Abner without rest. His name was Asahel. Abner, a trained killer, warned the young man to stop the pursuit so he wouldn’t have to kill him.

The young man wouldn’t take the warning. Abner then killed him and finally, Joab’s men stopped chasing to care for Asahel, except for Joab and his other brother Abishai. David’s men won the battle but lost Asahel.

This also extended a bitter rivalry between Joab and Abner. Joab knew he would avenge his brother’s death one day! This is the summary of 2 Samuel chapter 2, glory to Honor.
