Joshua chapter 20 summary is a cute little chapter that deals with the appointment of cities of refuge. What is a city of refuge? Well, it’s like a safe town, where someone is placed or can go to be sheltered from the pursuit of danger.
In Israel, cities of refuge were appointed so people didn’t have to create jails or “correctional institutions.” It wasn’t for the premeditated murder! This is how it worked: If someone accidentally killed anyone unaware or unwittingly, they were permitted to flee to a city of refuge.
Joshua Chapter 20 Summary
When there, they could explain what happened to the elders of the city and the elders (based on their story) would grant the slayer room to stay in the city.
They also protected him against the avenger, because the offender did not kill premeditatedly. He was committed to remain in the city until he stood before a judge or until the death of the current high priest of those days.
After either one of these, he could return home. So Israel appointed cities for refuge for both the stranger who dwelt with them and the children of Israel.
And this is the summary of Joshua chapter 20, glory to Yah the Highest.
