1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Almighty, saying,
2 Stand in the gate of the Almighty’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Almighty, all ye of Juda, that enter in at these gates to worship the Almighty.
3 Thus saith the Almighty of hosts, the Creator of Akobe, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Almighty, The temple of the Almighty, The temple of the Almighty, are these.
5 For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye thoroughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor;
6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, forever and ever.
8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Almighty.
12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Akobe.
13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Almighty, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;
14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.
16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.
17 Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Juda and in the streets of Jerusalem?
18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.
19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the Almighty: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?
20 Therefore thus saith the Almighty Creator; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.
21 Thus saith the Almighty of hosts, the Creator of Akobe; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
23 But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your Creator, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:
26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
27 Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them,, but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.
28 But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the Almighty their Creator, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished and is cut off from their mouth.
29 Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for the Almighty hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
30 For the children of Juda have done evil in my sight, saith the Almighty: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.
31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Almighty, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
33 And the carcasses of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.
34 Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Juda, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

Jeremiah chapter 7 summary
In the opening of Jeremiah chapter 7, the word of the Almighty comes to the prophet Jeremiah, instructing him to stand at the gate of the Almighty’s house (the temple in Jerusalem) and proclaim a message to the people of Juda who enter there for worship.
The message from the Almighty emphasizes the need for the people to amend their ways and deeds. They are urged not to trust in lying words, specifically the repeated claim that “The temple of the Almighty” will protect them. Instead, the Almighty emphasizes the importance of genuine repentance and righteous behavior.
The conditions for continued dwelling in the land are laid out: The people must amend their ways, execute just judgments, refrain from oppressing strangers, orphans, and widows, and avoid shedding innocent blood. They are also warned against following other gods.
If the people truly repent and meet these conditions…
…the Almighty promises that they will dwell in the land forever, as He had promised to their forefathers. However, the people are reminded that their trust in empty religious rituals and false words is misplaced.
The Almighty rebukes the people for their hypocrisy, noting their sins, including theft, murder, adultery, false oaths, and idol worship, all while continuing to come to His house in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices.
The passage recalls the fate of Shiloh, where the Almighty had originally set His name but later abandoned due to the wickedness of His people. Now, because of their persistent disobedience and refusal to heed His calls to repentance, the Almighty announces judgment on His own house, the temple in Jerusalem.
He declares that He will cast the people out of His sight!
Just as He did with the brethren of Juda, referring to the exile of the northern kingdom of Efraim. This serves as a warning of the impending consequences of their actions.
After this, the Almighty delivers a stern message to Jeremiah, instructing him not to pray or intercede on behalf of the people of Juda. The Almighty declares that He will not listen to Jeremiah’s prayers or cries for this disobedient nation.
The Almighty draws Jeremiah’s attention to the sinful practices occurring in the cities of Juda and the streets of Jerusalem. The people, including children, fathers, and women, are engaged in idolatrous rituals. They gather wood, kindle fires, knead dough, and prepare cakes as offerings to the “queen of heaven” and other gods, accompanied by drink offerings.
These practices provoke the Almighty to anger.
The Almighty questions whether the people’s actions are meant to provoke Him or lead to their own confusion and downfall. He warns of the impending judgment, stating that His anger and fury will be poured out upon the land, affecting both humans and animals, as well as the trees and fruit of the ground. This judgment will be unquenchable, consuming everything in its path.
The Almighty emphasizes that His original commandments to the people did not focus on burnt offerings or sacrifices when He brought their ancestors out of Egypt. Instead, He commanded them to obey His voice, promising to be their Creator and them His people if they walked in His ways. However, the people did not listen; they ignored His commands, inclined their ears elsewhere, and followed the counsels and imaginations of their evil hearts.
As a result, they regressed rather than progressing in their faith.
The Almighty highlights that He continued to send prophets to the people from the day their ancestors left Egypt up to the present. He diligently sent His servants, rising early and frequently, to convey His messages. Yet, the people persistently refused to listen or incline their ears to Him, ultimately hardening their necks and behaving even worse than their forefathers in their rebellion against the Almighty.
The chapter concludes as Jeremiah is instructed by the Almighty to deliver a message to the people, knowing that they will not listen or respond. He is commanded to emphasize that the nation of Juda has become obstinate, refusing to obey the voice of the Almighty their Creator, and rejecting His correction. Truth has vanished from their midst.
Jerusalem is called upon to symbolically cut off its hair and engage in lamentation in high places. Why? It’s because the Almighty has rejected and abandoned this generation due to their disobedience.
The Almighty condemns the children of Juda for their evil deeds.
They have placed their abominable practices within the house called by His name, defiling it. Specifically, they have built high places in Tophet, located in the valley of the son of Hinnom, where they sacrifice their sons and daughters in the fire—an act that was neither commanded by the Almighty nor entered His heart.
As a consequence, the Almighty prophesies that a time will come when Tophet and the valley of the son of Hinnom will no longer be known as such but will be renamed the “valley of slaughter.” It will be a place where corpses are buried continuously, with no room to spare.
The fate of this disobedient people is grim. Their corpses will become food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to scare them away. Consequently, the joyful voices of mirth, gladness, bridegrooms, and brides will cease to be heard in the cities of Juda and the streets of Jerusalem, as the land is left desolate as a result of their unfaithfulness.
