1 Righteous art thou, O Almighty, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?
2 Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.
3 But thou, O Almighty, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?
6 For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.
7 I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.
8 Mine heritage is unto me as a lion in the forest; it crieth out against me: therefore have I hated it.
9 Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.
10 Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.
11 They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.
12 The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the Almighty shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.
13 They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the Almighty.
14 Thus saith the Almighty against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Akobe to inherit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Juda from among them.
15 And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.
16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The Almighty liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.
17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the Almighty.
Jeremiah chapter 12 summary…
In Jeremiah 12, the prophet Jeremiah is in prayer to the Almighty. He asks why the ways of the wicked prosper. It’s the age-old question, even Job and King David would ask.
The prophet Jeremiah expresses his deep concern and confusion to the Almighty. He questions why the wicked appear to prosper and find happiness while dealing treacherously, and he seeks understanding about the seeming contradiction between their success and divine justice. Jeremiah metaphorically describes the wicked as plants that have taken root and are thriving, despite their insincerity in their relationship with the Almighty.
He contrasts this with his own relationship with the Almighty, emphasizing that the Almighty knows him intimately and has tested his heart. Jeremiah pleads with the Almighty to uproot the wicked like sheep for the slaughter and prepares them for a day of judgment.
Then the Almighty responds through Jeremiah…
He laments the suffering of the land, its withering vegetation, and the suffering of animals and birds due to the wickedness of the people.
Commenting on the future fate of the people, the Almighty asked if they were barely able to deal with men on foot in a race, how would they run against horses? This is to say while they were in the land on their own, they could barely be righteous. How much more unrighteous will they be when they dwell with their enemies, depicted as horses?
The Almighty noted to Jeremiah that his own family (people of Akobe and Juda) had treacherously dealt with him. Therefore, the Almighty has forsaken His house and heritage. They will fall into the hands of their enemies. The Almighty’s heritage has become like a lion in the forest shouting at Him! They are like speckled birds; all the other birds dislike the people of Akobe and will devour them.
What is the cause of the House of Akobe’s downfall?
Jeremiah states pastors, many of them, have destroyed the Almighty’s vineyard. Pastors priests, and clergymen are to blame because they have walked on the riches of the Almighty. They have not given the riches to the people, thus making even Juda a desolate wilderness. No one lays to heart why the land and people are desolate.
Spoilers will cover the land, no one will have peace. The Almighty calls out all the evil neighbors of Akobe. Those who have taken the land that He gave to His people to inherit, He calls them out to make them aware He will pluck the house of Akobe and Juda out of the land.
However, He will eventually have compassion on them and bring them back to dwell in their land. If the nations, the enemies will learn of the Almighty as they taught others the learn of Baal, they will be able to dwell in the land with the house of Akobe. But they refuse, He will pluck them up and destroy them as a nation.
