Deuteronomy chapter 20 summary is about rules for engagement. This is not to be confused with the television series, but for the actual meaning of the phrase. The phrase points to a directive issued by a military authority controlling the use and degree of force.
Especially specifying circumstances and limitations for engaging in combat (thank you dictionary.com). So these are the rules and laws for going to war for the children of Israel. God told them not to worry about what they see in their enemies when they go to battle.
It could be the horses, chariots, and more men of war than that of Israel. God said they should not fear anything because the Lord would be with them. The Lord would be with them just as He was with them when He brought them out of Egypt.
Deuteronomy Chapter 20 Summary
The battles or wars would begin with the priest. The priests began the charge by first giving Israel a pep talk to be valiant in the Lord. Then the officers conduct a doubt-removing process. This was sending home soldiers who have doubts fears or concerns about things at home.
Concerns includeD things like someone recently purchased a house, got married, had a new child, or who is just plain fearful. The officers were commanded to send these men home.
When the leaders (priests) made an end to speaking and ridding the concerned and fearful, the priests would then set up captains over the armies to lead them. If instead of war, Israel made peace with their enemies, their enemies would become tributaries and serve them.
Destroy Not the Trees
If they warred with a nation and overthrew that nation, it was commanded they kill every male. However unmarried women, little children, and cattle they were allowed to keep as spoil. The only case where they could not do this was with the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
These people would teach the children of Israel all of their abominations and thus God did not want even their women or little ones to survive. The chapter ends as with instructions for Israel not to chop down the trees of the nations that they destroy.
The tree of the field is man’s life, therefore do not to put the ax to the tree. Only the trees that are not for food were they allowed using for battle. This is chapter 20 summary of Deuteronomy.
