Bible Study: Should You Help The Ungodly?

Welcome to BibleStudyMinistry.com, your online bible study supplement source. Today, we are looking at whether you should help the ungodly. Let’s dive in. I have a few childhood buddies who are not trying to do anything right in life. They whore mong and drink; they can’t keep a job, then when the rent is due, they call me to help them.

If I am unable, they cuss me out and tell me how bad of a person I am. Don’t get me wrong; I do help them occasionally, but this scripture poses the question of whether I should even bother with them.

Scripture Focus: 2 Chronicles 19:2 (KJV)

“And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Almighty? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Almighty.”

Understanding the Question

In this passage, Jehu, the prophet, confronts King Jehoshaphat of Juda after he allied himself with King Ahab of Efraim, an ungodly and wicked ruler. Jehoshaphat, a righteous king who sought to honor the Almighty, made the mistake of joining forces with someone who actively opposed the Creator’s commandments. Jehu’s question—“Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Almighty?”—serves as a powerful warning against aligning ourselves with those who reject the Almighty.

1. The Danger of Helping the Ungodly

Key Insight: The scripture highlights the spiritual consequences of aiding those who are against the Almighty. When we align ourselves with the ungodly, we risk sharing in their sin and coming under the Almighty’s judgment. The principle here is not merely about physical assistance but about forming partnerships, alliances, or support that compromise our stand with the Creator.

Additional Scripture:

  • Psalm 1:1: “Enriched is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding the influence and company of the ungodly. Walking, standing, or sitting in fellowship with those who oppose the Creator places us in a position of compromise and hinders our spiritual growth.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” Paul’s exhortation to the believers in Corinth mirrors Jehu’s question to Jehoshaphat. Being yoked with unbelievers creates a conflict between righteousness and unrighteousness, light and darkness. Such alliances can pull us away from the Almighty’s purpose and lead us into situations that provoke His displeasure.

2. Loving Those Who Hate the Almighty

Jehu’s rebuke also touches on the danger of showing affection or preference for those who are openly opposed to the Almighty. The issue is not about withholding kindness or refusing to show love in the general sense, but about guarding our hearts and affections from becoming entangled with those who stand against divine principles.

Additional Scripture:

  • James 4:4: “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” Friendship with the world—its values, systems, and those who oppose the Almighty—creates a division between us and the Creator. Loving those who hate the Almighty, in the sense of aligning with their ways and approving their actions, places us at odds with the Eternal.
  • Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Jehoshaphat’s alliance with Ahab may have seemed politically or strategically sound, but it was spiritually damaging. Similarly, our well-intentioned efforts to help or connect with those who oppose the Almighty can lead us down a path that brings consequences we may not foresee.

3. The Wrath of the Almighty

Jehu warns that aiding the ungodly and loving those who hate the Almighty brings wrath. This highlights a broader biblical principle that our actions, especially those that involve spiritual compromise, have consequences.

Additional Scripture:

  • Proverbs 17:15: “He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Almighty.” Assisting the ungodly or endorsing their actions, even indirectly, is seen as justifying the wicked. This is detestable to the Almighty and incurs His displeasure.
  • Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” Aligning with those who reject the Creator blurs the lines between right and wrong. It invites confusion and judgment upon those who should be setting a standard of righteousness.

Conclusion: Walking in Wisdom and Discernment

Helping the ungodly and loving those who hate the Almighty is not about acts of kindness or showing love in a general sense. We can show love and be kind to everyone. It’s about partnerships, alliances, and the influence. When we make partnerships and alliances this can thwart things for us. It’s the influence that ungodly relationships can have on our spiritual lives. Jehu’s question to Jehoshaphat is a call to carefully guard our associations. Also, to ensure that our actions align with the will and character of the Eternal Almighty Father.

We are called to love all people, but we must also exercise wisdom and discernment. This ensures that our support and alliances do not compromise our faith or lead us away from the Almighty’s commandments. Jehoshaphat’s error serves as a lesson. One, our loyalty must remain with the Creator. Two, we must avoid entanglements that pull us into spiritual compromise.
