As the reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests the ears with his arm, it is like one who gathers heads of grain in the valley of Rephaim. Yet gleanings will remain like an olive tree that has been beaten–two or three berries atop the tree four or five on its fruitful branches,” declares the Sovereign LORD, the Elohim of Israel.
In that day men will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel. They will not look to the altars they have made with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
Yes, in that day their strong cities will be like forsaken thickets and summits, abandoned to the Israelites and to utter desolation. For you have forgotten the Elohim of your salvation and failed to remember the Rock of your strength.
A Tumult of Many Nations
Therefore, even though you cultivate delightful plots and set out cuttings from exotic vines; though on the day you plant you make them grow, on that morning you help your seed sprout; yet the harvest will vanish on the day of disease and incurable pain.
Alas, the tumult of many peoples; they rage like the roaring seas; the uproar of the nations; they rumble like the crashing of mighty waters. The nations rage like the rush of many waters.
He rebukes them, and they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, like tumbleweeds before a honeycomb. In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning, they are no more! This is the portion of those who loot us and the lot of our plunderers.
Chapter Remarks
Isaiah chapter 17 is the burden or oracle spoken concerning Damascus. Damascus is known worldwide anciently because of Paul the apostle. He was headed there when he was infamously blinded. Today it is the capital city of the state of Syria.
In ancient days it was a trading post northeast of Jerusalem. Why do and did they have a burden, which began by stating the city will be taken away and become a ruinous heap? Aroer was cities of Aram, which is Syria; they will be left to flocks with no one to fear.
Why is this? For one thing, Syria and Ephraim (Samaria) bordered each other and Ephraim would be like a fortress for Syria. However, it wouldn’t last because Ephraim would no longer be a kingdom.
Assyrian Invasion
In that day the glory of Jacob will be thin and he’ll eat away at his own flesh. The scripture is telling us when Damascus will be in ruins; it is when Israel is waxed lean. This is a “jumping” prophecy; this is why.
The house of Israel (the ten tribes) originally went into captivity to the Assyrians. The year 732 BC saw the first Assyrian invasion of Israel. This event is well documented in the Bible, albeit not from the viewpoint of Israel but of its southern neighbor, the kingdom of Judah.
The house of Judah foolishly followed suit going into their own captivity to the Babylonians. The siege of Jerusalem was a military campaign carried out by Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon, in 597 BC.
Ephraim Came to the Americas
Some “Jews” were allowed to return to rebuild for the sake of the Messiah. They returned but it was short-lived as general Titus led a siege that emptied the land in 70 AD. The house of Joseph (Ephraim) relocated to the Americas renewed but returned to their old pagan ways.
The ALMIGHTY sent Chris Columbus to put them back in their right mind. This captivity took place from 1453 to the present. “Bring it, home Minister Koko,” “no problem, I will.”
Finally, the captivities will produce so much affliction that men will finally look to his Maker and respect the Holy One of Israel. They will leave their idols after the nations rush like rushing waters and the Most-High settles the tides of the world national issues.
Syria / Damascus Has Been in Turmoil
If we look at the news, we’d see Syria in the thick of many uprisings and national conflict. The nation has been war-torn since 2010; a peaceful uprising against the president of Syria 10 years (2011) ago turned into a full-scale civil war.
The conflict has left more than 380,000 people dead, devastated cities, and drawn in other countries. It will escalate into multiple nations warring soon, including the likes of Russia, China, and the US.
Syria has been a part of the nations that have spoiled and robbed the house of Israel, and this is their portion for doing so. Pray for the saints there, watch and pray, pray they repent.
