Abraham seeks a pure wife for Isaac; the wife would be chosen from among his people back home. He decided to bypass the Canaanites he lived with and travel back to Mesopotamia to find a wife for his son Isaac. He sent his servant to help him find a wife from among his family.
The servant prayed to the LORD GOD of Abraham to guide him and show kindness to his master. As he came to the city of Nahor, he found a well, and a beautiful young damsel came to fill up her pitcher.
Her name was Rebekah; she was very helpful, cordial, and spirited; the servant of Abraham knew she was the one for Isaac. He further learned that she was the daughter of Bethuel, who is the son of Milcah and Nahor. The servant was overjoyed at GOD’s grace.
Mother of Millions
He went on to meet the family and tell the nature of his travel; he revealed he is Abraham’s servant. They were overjoyed also to hear from Abraham. Bethuel and his son Laban (Rebekah’s brother) agreed to the marriage proposal, which did not include Abraham’s presence, nor the groom, Isaac.
Plenty of gifts were given to Rebekah and the family of Bethuel, jewels of silver, gold, clothing. Rebekah agreed and left with the servant; she was prayed over and blessed to become the mother of thousands of millions. In addition, her seed will possess the gate of those that hate them.
She married Isaac and he loved her (Genesis 24).
Takeaways
Principle: Marry those with who you will be equally yoked; this means we are supposed to marry someone of our own spiritual nature. Many people overlook this and have heaps of troubles down the road. Here’s something to ponder young folks, if your family says watch out because of hidden behavior tendencies your potential spouse has, take heed. They usually are not clouded by the aroma of “love!”
History: Isaac avoids the fate of marrying one of the Canaanites, who were deemed to become servants of Shem and Japheth. They also rebelled grossly from the LORD.
Prophecy: Isaac’s wife, Rebekah, was prayed over by her family and prophesied over to become the mother of millions and that her seed would possess the gates of them or those that hate them. This is speaking of the children of her son Jacob, Israel. Who hates the children of Israel? We will see.
More 5 Minute Studies
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The disciples asked, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
