Numbers Chapter 5

Numbers 5 StudyBible Commentary on Numbers 5

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead:

Both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell.

The Lord had Moses pitch His tent far away from the camp so not to destroy them. In addition to this, the Lord commands Moses to tell the children of Israel that every leper, person with a running issue, or who is defiled by a dead body must get out of the camp until they are cleansed. It does not matter if they are male or female. The primary reason is because the Lord Himself dwells right in the midst of the children of Israel.

Verses six through ten speak on if a man sins against another man, then he should first confess to his sin and what he has done and repay the trespass with the principal part and in addition fifth part to it to the person he sinned against. Now if he sinned against the LORD then he is supposed to bring his recompense to the priest to make atonement for him.

If a woman commits adultery against her husband and he does not know about it or have witness against her and the spirit of jealousy comes on him; the man is then to bring his wife to the priest. The angels of the Lord give us this spirit of jealousy if something fishy is going on. This is how most men and certainly women pick up on abnormal behavior from their spouse. Women call it a “woman’s intuition” and men call it a “gut feeling” it really is the subconscious mind taking notice of a difference in the spouse, and that is the spirit of God dropping the spirit of jealousy upon the person who receives it.

If this happens the man is then supposed to bring his wife before the priest with an offering. The priest would then bring her and set her before the LORD. Now if this sounds like a court case or court setting, you would be right. This is where many of our world systems take things from (the Bible) and just furnish it differently.

16 And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the Lord:

18 And the priest shall set the woman before the Lord, and uncover the woman’s head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse:

The priest would then do his ritual taking holy water and going through the required routine. The priest is then to uncover the woman’s head. This would mean that as she comes before the Lord, her head was covered. The priest uncovers her head. This is why women are supposed to wear a head covering to be protected from the evil angels (as Paul wrote about – more on that later).

Eve sinned because she was not covered by her covering, which was her husband. The head covering represents the covering or protection of Jesus. Well the priest uncovers her head and goes into his ritual.

29 This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is defiled;

The ritual would take place, if the woman was found guilty she would be cursed and if cursed she would take on the iniquity and the curse would be upon her body. If she was innocent, then nothing would happen; however I’m sure the man would have a few days of sleeping on the couch.

This is a quick study on Numbers chapter 5; God bless you today in Jesus name. Amen.

    The spirit of jealousy… the headcovering I thought was part of the church. So many people have talked against it and you’d barely see a televised church with the women covering their head. I’m from Jamaica and it is customary that all women come to church with their head covered, it is something that is just practiced; I didn’t know it had biblical foundations. Good study today, thank you Ishe.
