What Does the Bible Say About Heaven?

What Does the Bible Say About Heaven?

This can be a touchy subject because many Christians are so engulfed with going to heaven.  Where this came from is not certain but in my opinion it came from the Roman rule of the church and not under the children of Israel.

I remember setting in a bible study when a young eight year old girl asked, what does the bible say about heaven? The bible says many things about heaven.  Such a question needs to be more precise.  To begin with what is heaven, where is heaven, are there more than one heaven, how do you get access to heaven, and the list goes on and on. We can answer the question what is heaven?  In Genesis chapter 1 God created Heaven.

6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Sun Moon and Stars…

The heaven was created and this is what the bible says about heaven.  What or which heaven was this?  It is the place where the sun, moon, and stars are located.  Where we call outer-space, is known as heaven.

14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

The Third Heaven…

I sometimes explain this to people and ask if they still want to go to heaven.  Is this the only heaven?  Paul speaks about a third heaven and Jesus often spoke about the earth as heaven. When Jesus told us not to swear or vow by heaven because Heaven is God’s throne, we understand God is in Heaven.

What Does the Bible Say About Heaven?

God is in Heaven, which is the third heaven that lies above the waters that divide it from the second heaven (sun, moon, stars, atmospheres, etc.). The reason scientist and NASA can never get beyond this galaxy or universe is because there is a large body of water that obviously no man can penetrate.

This is why Jesus said no man can go to heaven or has gone to heaven except the Son of Man who came down from heaven (St. John 3 v13). As Paul recanted his experience of Jesus intervening on his life and mission, he tells us that Jesus appeared as one from the third heaven.

Where is the First Heaven!?

This is the heaven the Father and the angels dwell and where no man has ever been.  This is the heaven that is God’s throne (Matthew 5 v34).  Thus far we’ve certainly established two heavens, God’s throne where the stones of fire are that Satan desires to return and walk upon (Ezekiel 28 v13-15).

The second is where the sun, moon, and stars are, even the clouds.  Where is the first heaven? Upon the return of Jesus Christ, He promised to gather His elect from the four corners of the earth.  He called the earth heaven in Matthew 24 verses 31.

His angels will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to another.  There are our three heavens.  Heaven is location and can be equated with paradise or its’ most useful and practical term, the Kingdom of God.

Heaven on Earth Forever…

Essentially, God is preparing the real Heaven on Earth now.  He is making the real version, the everlasting version of the earth and He is working on this right now.  This earth is just the rendering of what is to come.

Finally the Lord God will bring down the new heaven and a new earth and the glorious city New Jerusalem will be in it and it will come down out of Heaven and become Heaven on Earth forever!
