The Words of Jeremiah the Son of Hilkiah of the Priests: My name is Jeremiah. I am a priest. My father, Hilkiah, and everyone else in my family is from Anathoth. This is the territory of the tribe of Benjamin.
This book contains the things that the LORD ALMIGHTY commanded me to say. The LORD first spoke to me in the thirteenth year that Josiah was king of Judah, and he continued to speak to me during the rule of Josiah’s son Jehoiakim.
The last time the Lord spoke to me was in the fifth month of the eleventh year that Josiah’s son Zedekiah was king. That was also when the people of Jerusalem were taken away as prisoners.
Jeremiah Thought to Be Too Young
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the belly I knew you; before you came forward out of the womb I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” I replied, “I’m not a good speaker, Lord, and I’m too young.”
“Don’t say you’re too young,” the LORD ALMIGHTY answered. “If I tell you to go and speak to someone, then just go! And when I tell you what to say; don’t leave out a word! I promise to be with you and keep you safe, so don’t be afraid.”
The Lord reached out his hand, then he touched my mouth and said, “I am giving you the words to say, and I am sending you with authority to speak to the nations for me. You will tell them of doom and destruction, and of rising and rebuilding again.”
Evil Will Come Out of the North
Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a rod of an almond tree.” Then said the LORD ALMIGHTY to me, “You seen well, for I will hasten My word to perform it.”
Then the LORD ELOHIM showed me something else and asked, “What do you see now?” I responded, “I see a pot of boiling water in the north, and it’s about to spill out toward us.” Then the LORD said to me, “Out of the north evil will break out upon all the inhabitants of the land. Because look, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the LORD.
“And they will come, and they will set everyone in his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem. They will set them against all the walls there round about, and against all the cities of Judah. And I will utter My judgments against them touching all their wickedness. Against those also who have forsaken Me, and have burned incense to other gods.
The LORD Will Fight Against Our Enemies
I will judge those who worshipped the works of their own hands. So you then gird up your loins, arise, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed at their faces, unless I confound you before them.
For, see, I have made you this day a defenced city, a pillar of iron, and brazen walls against the whole land. Yes, against the kings of Judah, against the princes, against the priests, and against the people of the land.
And they will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you; for I am with you,” says the LORD ELOHIM ALMIGHTY, “to deliver you.”
Context of the Chapter
This intro chapter by Jeremiah the prophet allows us to see exactly how he was called. Also, how he was ordained by the ALMIGHTY. Jeremiah’s family lived in Anathoth, the land of the Benjamites. This means he, more likely than not, was from the tribe of Benjamin. This is the same tribe of King Saul, and the well-known apostle of CHRIST, Paul.
The MOST-HIGH gets right to the point and commands you to do what HE wants of you. You either do it or you don’t, the consequences, good or bad, will fall upon your own head. Jeremiah chose to do so and the book he recorded tell us the nature of his missions as a prophet.
He mainly prophesied during the days of Josiah all the way through Zedekiah, kings of Judah. The people, princes, and kings did not listen to his word by the LORD’s mouth. For that they ended up in captivity. They will find themselves in Babylon under the Chaldean king, Nebuchadnezzar the II. This will be a great refresher for us. This is based on Jeremiah 1
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The disciples asked, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”
