Study Topic: Forsaken the Fountain of Living Waters

Forsaken the Fountain of Living Waters

In the previous posting of the Famine in the Land study topic, God proclaimed there would be a famine. This famine would not be of bread and thirst, but of the Word of the Lord. Why would God take away His Words from the people? It’s simple; they have forsaken the fountain of Living Waters.

In Jeremiah chapter 2 verse 9 through 13, the Lord makes it very clear that He will plead with the children of Israel’s children. When people take ‘things’ for granted, that is usually when “that thing” or ‘things’ are taken away.

As it is taken away, it is then people feel the effects of how crucial and precious “that thing” was to them. I believe Janet Jackson sang the song, Got Til It’s Gone, that we do not know what we have until it’s gone. That is if we take things for granted.

The Creator is now set to deal with the children of Israel, who are primarily responsible for this famine. See Jeremiah 2:

9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children’s children will I plead.

Don’t Know What You Got, Til It’s…

If you are part of the children of Israel today, you are being dealt with, and by dealt with it is to say chastised. They are being chastised by the God of Israel for the sins of their forefathers and for their own sins as well. But the Lord said that this people will consider things diligently and see if there has ever been such a thing. What thing?

Has there ever been a nation that has change the true God for gods which are no gods? However the children of Israel have changed their glory, which was having the God of Israel as their God, for gods that do not profit them.

Trading God for gods…

What a mistake! Continuing in Jeremiah 2 it says:

10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.

13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

(emphasis mine)

Trading Everything for Nothing!

Imagine having the Creator of the world as your God and giving that up for a desktop. We’ve all watched science and astronomy sciences of the universe and galaxy. We’ve seen the abundance of stars and objects outside the earth.

Imagine for a moment that the Creator of all of that was personally taking care of you and your country. Can you imagine? That is quite a thought. Could you also imagine giving all of that up?

GoD had the prophet Jeremiah write it in a book for the people to be astonished. Also for them to be horribly afraid of what this man is capable of doing, the decisions he’s capable of making. We all should be afraid, if man or a nation of men, would trade the glory of the God of Israel for a pieces of bread, be afraid.

Come to Me ALL Who Thirst!

God’s people have done two great evils; the first evil is that they have forsaken God who is the fountain of living waters. Secondly, they have hewed themselves out cisterns or containers that cannot hold water.

Jesus the Messiah is the fountain of living waters that the children of Israel have forsaken. They have decided to go towards false gods, which hold no water (no truth). This phrase was repeated in St. John chapter 7 at verse 37 and 38. Jesus was at the feast of the Jews, it was the Eighth Day Feast, and Jesus stood up and cried aloud saying, “If any man thirst let him come unto Me and drink.”

37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

The Lord Provides the Living Waters

Jesus told us, those who believe on Him, as the Scripture says, out of His belly shall flow rivers of living water. This is not water as in the water in the ocean or water that rains down from Heaven. It’s not even that which comes down a stream from a river. This is the living water, speaking of the Word of God, that truly cleans and truly amends thirst.

The King Chooses His People

In St. John chapter 4 and verse 10 Jesus had a brief encounter with a Samaritan woman. He told her that if she knew the gift of God and who it was that was speaking to her, speaking of Himself, she would make a swift request. She would have asked to drink of the water that would give her life forever.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Jesus would’ve given her the living water. This is the water that everyone is thirsting after and this is the food everyone is a hungered after. It is the Word of God, which is Jesus Christ, His blood for drink and his body for bread.

Since a famine is coming in the land of the Word of the Living God, people are starving spiritually and dying, yet they do not even know it. They are not aware of what is written in the Bible, or aware of how to apply it. However, the day is coming where they are going to search sea to sea, and river to river, for someone who can teach them the Words of the Lord.
